About This Item
Glendale: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1979. First Edition. 304pp. Octavo [24.5 cm] Blue cloth with titles and rules gilt stamped on backstrips. Better than very good. Northwest Historical Series XIV (14). Siigned by the author on the title page. In this biography, Drury attempts to give a voice to a 'pro-white' or 'pro-treaty Indian. Lawyer played a major role in the Nez Perce-U.S. Government negotiations and treaties. He was vilified in the 1850s and '60s, and is still sharply criticized today. As a strong advocate of Whitman, Spalding, and other Protestant missionaries, Drury felt that Lawyer was simply being realistic. Clark & Brunet 74.
