In the tumultuous landscape of the American Civil War, a lesser-known theater unfolds—the New Mexico campaign. In "The Confederate Invasion of New Mexico and Arizona, 1861-1862," Robert Lee Kerby delves into this pivotal chapter, revealing the audacious ambitions of Confederate Brigadier General Henry Hopkins Sibley. With the gold fields of Colorado and the ports of California at stake, Sibley's forces advanced north along the Rio Grande, clashing with Union troops at Valverde and Glorieta Pass. Kerby's scholarly work sheds light on this epic drama, where control of the Southwest hung in the balance.

Kerby's narrative takes us beyond the familiar battlefields of the East, transporting readers to the rugged terrain of the Southwest. As the Confederates pressed toward Santa Fe and Fort Union, their audacity threatened Union supply lines and strategic interests. At Glorieta Pass—the "Gettysburg of the West"—the tide shifted. Although the Confederates initially prevailed, the destruction of their vital wagon train forced a retreat. Kerby's meticulous research paints a vivid picture of this high-stakes campaign, where gold, silver, and the fate of the Union hung in precarious balance.
