About This Item
A PIONEER NEUROLOGIST
first edition tall 8vo. viii, 152pp., 34 text figures, contemporary half tan calf prize binding, grained tan cloth on sides, spine panelled by gilt raised bands with gilt tool at the panel centres, later black morocco title label, marbled endpapers, small worm(?) hole on rear joint at top corner of label, else very good.
Handsome large gilt oval supralibros of St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, on front board.
Ferrier (1843–1928), pioneering Scottish neurologist and psychologist, had through a series of experiments on animals in the 1870 demonstrated in a spectacular manner that specific parts of the brain cortex had quite a precise connection with specific motor functions. His results brought him international fame, election as Fellow of the Royal Society in 1876 and of Royal College of Physicians in 1837, and assured his permanent place as one of the greatest experimental neurologists.
His first major work was The Functions of the Brain (1876,,with a new much extended edition in 1886). In The Localization of Brain Disease (1888) he considered the clinical applications of cortical localization, in particular in relation to epilepsy. In these lectures, here reprinted from the British Medical Journal, he considers the contemporary state of knowledge based on the recent experimental work of both himself and others."As well as his experimental results, Ferrier's book [Croonian Lectures, 1890] included descriptions of [J. H.] Jackson's clinical cases. Thus Ferrier was among the first to apply his experimental principles to observations in man. He was indeed the link between Jackson and the modern work on the cerebral cortex of Sherrington and others" [Garrison History of Neurology]. "A later and detailed review of his results, and of those who followed him, appeared in his Croonian Lectures of June 1890" [Clarke & O'Malley Human Brain and Spinal Cord, p. 514].
