About This Item

New York: Atlantic Monthly, 2018. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Fine, fresh, unused copy. First editon, first printing. Hardcover. Masp endpapers. 410 pp. with timeline. Illustrated with photographs and reproductions. Acclaimed journalist Randell Sullivan explores the "curse" of Oak Island, a small and now privately owned island off the coast of Nova Scotia south of Halifax. In the 1790s, a group of teenagers discovered a mysterious circular depression on the island, which sparked rumors of buries treasure. They dug down some 80 feet, the shaft filled with clay, dirt and wood but at that depth the shaft continually flooded with water and further exploratiopn was impossible. Over the next two-plus centuries, the mystery of Oak Island's "Money Pit" has fired the imagination of generations of treasure hunters (including a young Franklin Delano Roosevelt). Swaths of the island have been excavated, bulldozed, and otherwise delved into (four lives have been lost in those attempts). Theories abound as to what may (or may not) be concealed---priate treasure? Marie Antionette's lost jewels? the Holy Grail? proof thast Francis Bacon was the true author of Shalespeare's plays?. This book inspired the History Channel documentary of the most recent quest, by a pair of brothers from Michigan.
