New York: Protestant Episcopal Society for the Promotion of Evangelical Knowledge, 1858. First edition. Hardcover. Near Very Good. 12mo. [9], iv-viii, [3], 12-312, [6] pp. Original dark brown blindstamped publisher's cloth with palm tree design stamped in gold on the front board, gilt decoration and lettering on the spine, yellow endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated by a frontispiece with tissue guard, eleven additional plates with tissue guards (back-to-back facing plates share one tissue guard), and a fold-out map of the Cape Palmas region. Ownership signature of W. W. Fowler, a missionary at the Santee Sioux Agency in the late 19th century, on the free front endpaper. An account of mid-19th century missionary work in the Cape Palmas region of western Africa in what is now Liberia. Near Very Good with gilt largely rubbed away on spine, rubbing and minor wear to boards, scattered foxing throughout, small chip to the bottom corner of one plate and the next leaf, and a few leaves with corner creases.
