About This Item
London: Printed for T. Payne, and Son,, 1787. Jeremy Bentham on Adam Smith First edition of Bentham's first work on economics, critiquing Smith's Wealth of Nations. Smith is reported to have said that Bentham "has given me some hard knocks... but in so handsome a manner that I cannot complain" (quoted in Atkinson, p. 82). This first edition is notably scarce: it is the first such copy we have handled. In Wealth of Nations, Smith defends the state regulation of interest rates for money lending. Bentham deems this inconsistent with Smith's wider laissez-faire philosophy and contends that no adult of sound mind, acting freely and in awareness of the likely consequences, should be hindered from making any bargain that they see fit to make. John Stuart Mill acclaimed the work as "the best extant writing" on the economic impact of regulated interest rates (quoted in Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Octavo (154 x 93 mm). Recent speckled calf to style, spine ruled in gilt, raised bands and red morocco label, covers with double-fillet panel in gilt. Tiny contemporary ink numerals to verso of title page. Light browning and foxing to outer margins, minor ink splash to outer edge, small repair to upper margin of title page: a very good copy. Chuo D4.1; ESTC T32289; Goldsmiths' 13428; Kress B.1163. Charles Atkinson Milner, Jeremy Bentham: His Life and Works, 1905.
