A first edition of this interesting examination of elephants by Sir Grafton Elliot Smith. First edition, in the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Written by prominent English anatomist, Egyptologist and writer of prehistory, Sir Grafton Elliot Smith. This study examines the elephant over the years, starting with early depictions of the animal in art-form. Smith explores the role of India in spreading the symbol of the elephant to other countries. With fifty-two illustrative plates by engravers A. Horace Gerrard and K. Leigh-Pemberton. Collated, complete. With two newspaper cuttings of obituaries of Sir Grafton Elliot Smith from the British Medical Journal, and one further article describing an excavation of human remains, undertaken by Smith. With a bookplate and booksellers label of H. K. Lewis & Co, Ltd, of the Medical & Scientific Circulating Library. Also with a label for 'Lewis's Library' to the front cover. With an ink inscription of Frank Forty to the front endpaper. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the extremities. Slight bumping, heavier to the rear. Light damp staining to the boards, heavier to the rear. Lewis's Library label to the front board. Bookplate and bookseller label to the front paste down. Ink inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Good
