About This Item

Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1960., 1960. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Cloth, xv [1], 348 pp., preface, numerous illustrations, 7 maps, bibliography, index. The author has compiled the accounts of newspaper correspondents who participated in hundreds of clashes between Indians and the U.S. Army. The accounts often differ somewhat from the "official" reports released by the Army. As such they give unique insight into the action, inaction, and personalities of many officers involved in these battles. The author gives extensive accounts of the following campaigns: Crook's Campaign in Idaho, Oregon, and California in 1867; Custer's attack on the Cheyennes in 1868; a fascinating account of the Modoc War of 1873; Crook's famous Battle of the Rosebud; Custer's disastrous campaign of 1876; and Crook's pursuit of the Sioux in late 1876. An outstanding work. Jennewein 72 says, "... a most excellent book." A fine copy in dust jacket with some light rubbing and edge wear, and a small chip to top edge of spine.
