About This Item

New York: D. Appleton and Company,, 1922. First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his father on the front free endpaper within a month of publication: "To Mr J. S. Cooper, with the love and respect of his son, the author. C.S.C. Feb 17. 1922". Clayton S. Cooper's (1869-1936) account of the United States's foreign trade is truly global in scope, covering imports and exports with Mexico, Egypt, China, the Philippines, and more. These insights, one contemporary reviewer notes, are furnished by the author's "wide reading and extensive travel" (Robertson, p. 729). Presenting "somewhat specifically 'the how' and 'the where'" (p. v) behind the operation of the world's markets, Cooper also emphasizes the importance of cultures and customs when embarking on foreign trade by providing accounts of "the people themselves with whom we are dealing and with whom our international commercial relations are certain to be increasingly intimate as the years pass" (ibid.) Octavo. Original reddish-purple cloth, titles to spine in gilt and front cover in blind. With dust jacket. Frontispiece and 15 other half-tones after photographs. Spine lightly sunned, front hinge a little tender, light foxing to edges, contents clean. A very good copy indeed, in like dust jacket, a couple of nicks and shallow chips, a few light marks, else bright and sharp. James Alexander Robertson, "Foreign Trade Markets and Methods: [Review]", The Hispanic American Historical Review, vol. 5, no. 4, Nov. 1922.
