University of South Sewaneed Tennessee(1907): The University Press. First Edition. Octavo. 293pp., A biography of Kirby-Smith who Graduated from West Point, in 1845, he fought in the Mexican War and in Indian warfare on the frontier before he reached the rank of major in 1860. He Commanded brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run. In 1862 he led the advance in the Kentucky campaign, he defeated the Union forces at Richmond and fought at Perryville, and Stones River in Tennessee. He later was given command of the Trans-Mississippi Department. In 1864 he met and defeated the Federal Red River expedition. On June 2, 1865, he formally surrendered the last armed Confederate force at Galveston, Texas. After the war, he became president of the University of Nashville. He resigned in 1875 to teach mathematics at the University of the South. "Inasmuch as Noll included long excerpts from Kirby Smith's letters, he regarded his study as chiefly autobiographical." Bound in Blue-gray cloth lettered and stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt, bump to upper corner, some soiling to covers, spine darkened, given to the library of Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States by William Eliot Furness, with their presentation engraved bookplate, top edge gilt, some fading to spine near foot from label removal.
