Pp. xii+428(last blank), 8 maps (4 folding), index; demy 8vo; dark blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, the boards a trifle bowed; top edges blue; price-clipped dust wrapper, edges lightly rubbed and creased, with a couple of tiny chips and splits, longer closed tear from head of backstrip tape repaired on reverse, the backstrip browned; ownership stamp (of Australian historian Dr. Ann M. Mitchell), and bookseller's sticker on upper pastedown, both pastedowns faintly offfset; A. & C. Black, London, 1940. First edition. The Pioneer Histories series. *An attempt to synthesize all the gold rushes of the last century as an aspect of the expansion of the European peoples. Includes chapters on Ballarat and Bendigo, and the Australasian rushes from the 1860s to the 1890s.
