Green colored boards with gilt lettering and red and green rose decoration. Soiling and age tanning to boards. Edges are lightly bumped. Corners rubbed from shelfwear. Head and tail of spine rubbed and slightly chipped. Faded gilt lettering on spine. Spine cocked. Soiling to top-edge and fore-edge of textblock. Cracked hinge at flyleaf and rear pastedown endpaper. Imprint and staining from a previously placed paperclip to front matter. Prev. owners’ inscriptions on ffep and title page. B&W Frontispiece slightly faded. Tissue guard present, partially separated from hinge but fully intact. Expected age-tanning and foxing to pages, but pages unmarked. Binding is intact, but book falls open and stays open at any page due to cracked hinge. Corners creased and some dog-eared pages. This is a lovely and well-loved novel, with b&w illustration plates throughout. This was the best-selling novel in the U.S. in 1900, the year this copy was published. First Editions

Synopsis

To Have and to Hold is a 1900 novel by American author, Mary Johnston. Published by Houghton Mifflin, according to the New York Times it was the bestselling novel in the United States that year. The book was twice adapted to the screen. The first silent film in 1916 was made by Jesse L. Lasky’s Famous Players company. It was directed by George Melford and starred Wallace Reid and Mae Murray. In 1922, Lasky did a remake, this time starring Bert Lytell and Betty Compson.
