About This Item
NY: Lyons & Burford, 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed on the title page by Fromm. Additionally laid in are two postcards from Fromm to an Oregon journalist about buying first editions of this and another book direct from him. Apparently they weren't readily available then, and a first edition of Indian Creek Chronicles appears to be uncommon now, with no other obvious copies available online. This is Fromm's terrific debut, a memoir telling of the winter he spent alone in a wall tent in the Bitterroot to tend two-million salmon eggs planted in a remote creek by the Montana Fish and Game. Many passages in this book are searing: an encounter with a bobcat, dressing an elk, and more. This bookseller recommends it highly. Fromm has gone on to an impressive career, mainly as a novelist, and is a four time winner of the Pacific Northwest Book Awards; he is a writer acclaimed in the Northwest who should probably be much better known beyond the region. One postcard depicts the Bitterroot River, which is a nice touch laid in here, and the other is of the Montana prairie. The recipient was a career newspaperman with a passion for the outdoors, and notably he covered the eruption of Mt. St. Helens for the Oregonian. A fine book in fine jacket. Comes with a fine Picador paperback reading copy. .

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
