About This Item

London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1808. 2 vols, 8vo, pp. xxiv, 430; 460, [4, ads] + folding frontispiece. Later polished calf, boards bordered with a double gilt rule enclosing a blind roll, spines divided by gilt rules and rolls, second and fourth compartments gilt-lettered direct, others with central decorative gilt tools, marbled edges and endpapers. A little light foxing, one leaf with a small marginal tear repaired with archival tape. Bindings in fine state. The third edition of Dibdin’s bibliographical classic on classics. Significantly expanded from the previous two editions - and now split across two volumes for the first time - it is still substantially smaller than the 1827 fourth and last, though it does contain the reference lists of classical series and best variorum editions omitted from the larger version. The third is also the scarcest edition on the market, especially in a beautifully preserved fine binding like this example. Windle A3c; Jackson 5.
