About This Item
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1908. Hardcover. Illustrations by F.C. Yohn. 8vo. Brown blind-embossed cloth with gilt lettering. viii, 510pp. Tissue-guarded color frontispiece, 3 full-page color plates. Very good. Binding gently edgeworn and rubbed, though internally tight and fine. Nice, tight first edition of the highly-regarded fifth historical novel set in Virginia in the early 19th century, penned by the noted Virginia novelist and women's rights crusader (1870-1936). This unusual copy extra illustrated: Inner flyleaves bear two facing fine heavy stock steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portraits of the novel's best-known historical figures -- Aaron Burr (at left) and Thomas Jefferson (at right), both undated but superb mid-19th century closeup portraits with facsimile signatures underneath.
