About This Item

London: Trübner & Co., 1871. [4], 128pp. With a half-title. Original publisher's red cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Very minor shelf-wear. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Courtenay Theydon Warner to FEP. Inked inscription to head of title: 'Edward Warner / from the Translator / Jan. 1872'. A fine presentation copy of the first edition of geographer and polar explorer Clements Robert Markham's (1830-1916) translation from the Quechua of the Inca drama Ollanta: 'this remnant of the literature of the Incas, was preserved until about 1770, by the quipus, or knotted calendar; when Dr. Valdoz, who had often witnessed the representation of the drama by Indian actors, before the ill-fated Inca, Tupac Amura, reduced it to writing. From this copy, written by Cura in pure Quichua, Mr. Markham has translated this English version'. . First edition. 8vo.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
