About This Item

London: Putnam,, 1937. You know you are truly alive when you're living among lions First edition, first impression, of the author's memoir of her 17 years in Kenya. Begun at Mbogani House as a collection of factual travel sketches, "it was revised to depict a vanished and inaccessible utopia - one with a beauty and harshness abstracted from African actuality" (Orlando). It was adapted into the 1985 Academy Award-winning film starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. A Danish translation, by the author herself, was published later in 1937, followed by the US edition in 1938. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Spine cocked, a little shelf-wear at extremities, foxing to edges and a few initial and final leaves; jacket toned and rubbed at edges, head of spine panel nicked and with small chip, rear panel a little soiled, a couple of marks, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.

Synopsis

Out of Africa is a memoir by Isak Dinesen, a nom de plume used by the Danish author Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke. The book, first published in 1937, recounts events of the seventeen years when Blixen made her home in Kenya, then British East Africa. The book is a lyrical meditation on Blixen’s life on her coffee plantation, as well as a tribute to some of the people who touched her life there. It is also a vivid snapshot of African colonial life in the last decades of the British Empire.
