Pp. xii+202+[10](advertisements); cr. 8vo; black cloth, lettered in white on spine and pink on upper board, lightly flecked and rubbed, the upper board faintly damp marked, edges lightly rubbed; free endpapers slightly offset, a little light foxing and occasional soiling; John Lane The Bodley Head, London, 1926. First edition. *Presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author on blank preliminary leaf: 'To a philosopher of Harley Street; from a philosopher of Fleet Street; To John F. Gow, from James Milne, The New Year: 1927'. Later from the library of Claude Prance, with his small book label (from Malta) and pencilled signature on the upper free endpaper. Most recently from the library of David Levine, Sydney, whose book label is also on the upper pastedown. James Milne (1865-1951) was a Scottish journalist, novelist and editor who also wrote under the pseudonyms Eliot Buckram and Elijah True. He was the founder and editor of Book Monthly, and from 1904 until 1918 he was Literary Editor of the Daily Chronicle.
