About This Item

London: W. Bowyer and J. Nichols, 1777. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardcover, full leather with red morocco label on spine. Marbled end pages. Nice edition with only edge chipping and spot on center of front board. To which are added two essays; I. On the Poetry of the Eastern Nations. II. On the Arts, commonly called Imitative. Interior pages lightly toned but of heavy stock, so they are in good condition. There are a few scattered notes in pencil, which can easily be erased if desired but since this book bears the bookplate of Joseph Cooper Walker (placed upside down in rear of book) the pencil marks have a historical significance. Joseph Cooper Walker (c.1762-1810) was an Irish antiquarian and writer and one of the original members of the Royal Irish Academy. The bookplate is by Duff and has the motto "Hope" added, which is the second state. Book binding good - no hinge cracks or torn/loose pages. The Joseph Cooper Walker bookplate makes it a one-of-a-kind item.

Terms of Sale

Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.

We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
