Biography. A well balanced account of Polk's conduct of complex military, diplomatic and domestic affiars during his presidency (1845-1849). It was during his administration that the United States greatly expanded its territory, through the annexation of the Republic of Texas, the Oregon Territory, and the Mexican Cession of nearly all the American Southwest following the Mexican-American War.
