Gell-Man won the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of quarks, the building blocks of elementary particles. An accomplished work of popular science, this is "Gell-Mann's own story of finding the connections between the basic laws of physics and complexity and diversity of the natural world" (jacket). Provenance: with an "autographed copy" sticker from Cody's Books, Berkeley, on the jacket front panel, and a single-page programme of the bookshop's events in May 1994, with Gell-Mann's visit on 6 May circled in red marker. Large octavo. Original coated boards, spine lettered in dark blue, colour photographic front cover. With printed acetate dust jacket. Graphs and illustrations within text. Covers and contents clean; jacket lightly soiled, unclipped: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.
