Bookplate (Joseph Barcley Fleming) in both volumes. Cloth chipped along ends of backstrip. Loss of cloth at cover tips. Cover darkened and rather soiled. Contents sound and clean. Top edge gilt. Illinois congressman who was a firm supporter of Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War ands served as U. S. Secretary of State for a few days at the beginning of Grant's Presidency before spending the rest of Grant's two Presidential terms as U. S. Minister to France.
