About This Item
London: New Orchard Editions, 1994. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First published in 1991 by Arms and Armour Press in London. This edition first published in 1994 by New Orchard Editions in London. Printed in Great Britain. Hard cover in fine condition with glossy pictorial boards that mirror the likewise fine dust jacket. Interior clean & tight; no writings, no markings noted. Rather than the usual price on dust jacket front, there is at the bottom of flap, the words, ""Previously published at ú19.95."" Overall presents as new and unread. * From the front jacket flap, ""The regimental system has been a fundamental element of the British Army for more than a hundred years. Based on regional identities, the system elicits a fierce loyalty from soldiers steeped in the traditions and history of their unit and native region. As a result of amalgamations a smaller army has evolved, and the focus of pride has inevitably been broadened; sometimes it has been eliminated altogether with the disbandment of a regiment; at other times it has largely been untouched - notably the Scottish division. As we approach the next millenium, and as the thawing of the Cold War makes its effects felt, there is probably not a better or a more appropriate time to look again at the regiments of the British Army. Ian Hallows, himself a former serviceman, has not confined himself solely to this task. He has compiled a reference book that enables the reader to look in detail at the battles and campaigns of the British Army, their regimental anniversaries and their battle honours. It is not simply a listing: the author has provided historical background in all the relevant areas, and has not missed an opportunity to provide anecdotes. Illustrated with line drawings, this welcome book is an excellent single-source reference to the British Army regiments and their history. It enables us to understand more fully their almost unique 'espirt de corps,' something that lies a the core of Britain's army structure.""
