About This Item

Ames, Iowa: The Iowa State College Press, 1940. First edition. Illustrated with botanical line drawings, small octavo, pp lxxxi, 285, very clean internally, green cloth very slightly worn and the lower corners very slightly bruised. [From the library of the botanist G. Thomas Robbins with his signature on the front endpaper and the Jepson Herbarium gift stamp also.]. ["For nature enthusiasts, students of forestry, visitors to the West and residents of the broad area lying between the Great Plains and the Pacific Coast states, this is the finest field guide available to Rocky Mountain tree species. All the native and naturalized trees within this region have been included, along with accurate, up-to-date distribution and zone maps showing exactly what trees are to be found in each area. Complete botanical and silvical descriptions cover habitat, shade tolerance, enemies, attitudinal range (when helpful) , wood type, reproduction, etc., for each of more than 125 species. Full-page plates accompany each of these descriptions, showing such characteristics as leaves, flowers, twigs, and fruits, all carefully drawn to provide the maximum amount of information necessary for identification purposes. In addition, variant and related trees are described, bringing the total number of trees covered to 252 species, representing 85 genera and 40 families. An extensive key and a check list of species by state have also been included, so that the name of any unfamiliar tree can be found in a matter of minutes."]. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good.
