First editions, first impressions; the first complete historical survey on the naval affairs of England and Britain, covering from pre-Norman Conquest to the death of Victoria I. The handsomely illustrated work was written by the most prominent naval historians of the time. It continues to be consulted by modern scholars and remains in print today. "There are substantial quotations from relevant primary sources and copious references to specific technical data, such as ship tonnages, numbers of guns, and names of captains. [Clowes'] history can be seen as a compilation of the fruits of this golden age of British naval history" (Hammer). Volumes 1-5 are in later issue bindings, the spines giving "President Roosevelt" following his election in 1901 (previously giving "Theodore Roosevelt" and then "Col. Theodore Roosevelt"). Seven volumes, large octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, naval medallion stamped on front covers in gilt, green coated endpapers, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. Prolifically illustrated with plates and illustrations in the text, including photogravures, diagrams, maps, and charts. Title pages printed in red and black. Two blank postcards from the Isle of Wight loosely inserted. Spine ends bumped, bright cloth slightly rubbed, partially affecting vol. 1 gilt medallion, foxing to contents, vol. 1 with cosmetic splits to front inner hinge, final page creased, and repaired closed tear to rear free endpaper.
