About This Item
Hong Kong: Oxford Univ Press, 1988. First Edition, First Thus . Soft cover. Near Fine/None as Issued. Text/corner fold to pg 61, else NEW & Bright. Softcover/NF w/trace edge & surface wear. Biography of Shanghai through 1949. Written with the general reader in mind, it is an excellent book to begin with. It is common knowledge that the city owes much to Western influence, but situated at the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai's unique vibrancy reaches far back. Drawing on Chinese and English guidebooks, memoirs and monographic studies, the author dispells the notion that Shanghai began to flourish only after it became a treaty port in the mid-19th century. Wei begins with the city's emergence as a center of commerce in the Sung Dynasty, maturing during the Ming, to its being carved into foreign concessions following the Opium War, and finally to the Communist rule in 1949 --- a major center of trade throughout. 14 chapters illustrated w/maps & archival photos.
