About This Item
Iowa City: University of Iowa Press. Near Fine in Fine dj. 1986. First Edition. Hardcover. [lovely copy with no discernible wear, but with a former owner's initials plus date & place of purchase inked on the rear pastedown (concealed beneath the rear jacket flap); the jacket itself is flawless. A "marvellously comprehensive" collection of letters about nearly every aspect of Sherlock Holmes's adventures, spanning 1887 to 1978, written to newspapers and magazines by critics and fans of the Great Detective -- a testament to his status as "the most solid and enduring myth to have been created during the last century." The editor has also provided an introduction that "describes the process of canonization (and stakes out a definitive cartography of Baker Street) [and] provides a stablizing ballast to a compilation that will delight the enthusiast and surprise the expert." .
