Dark brown cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, xii, 268 pp., preface, illustrated from photographs, maps, epilogue, notes, bibliography, index. The Somervell and Mier expeditions of 1842 culminated in the famous "black bean episode" in which prisoners drew white or black beans to determine who would be executed by their Mexican captors. The author examines the expedition from the perspective of were the Texans martyrs in a glorious cause, or were they undisciplined soldiers defying their own government. Fine, bright unread copy in rubbed dust jacket.
