About This Item
New York: St. Martins Press, 1972. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First US edition stated first printing 1972. Ex-library hardback book well bound with strong hinges. Still nice and tight with a little lean. Boards are clean, and remain sharp, with some expected handling marks, lower board has two historic and feint tape marks. The spine has bumped ends, and the gold titles are still bold. Text block edges have moderate toning, with neat library stamps to the top and bottom edges. There is a lending sheet remnant to the front pastedown, along with library stamp. The FEP has neat discard stamp, with a little offset toning. The half title and title pages are very clean and neat. The copyright page has two library stamps and small neat pencil notation. The text pages are all very clean and tidy, no marking or tears, except the final page (pg 223) that has two historic tape marks. The blank verso of this page also shows the tape marks and has a discard stamp. The rear FEP has been removed - probably to excise further stamps. Feels lightly read is still nice and tight. Grades as good condition. No jacket. Note we do not use stock images, the book pictured is the book described. Whilst we have graded this books as good due to the ex-library history, in the hand it feels better than the grade suggests. A solid copy of this very scarce title. This novel of alien control of Great Britain that results in anarchy was originally published in the UK in 1969 by Hodder, then issued by St. Martins Press in the USA in 1972. An important novel that won the Somerset Maugham Award the critic Baird Searles stated the book makes "A Clockwork Orange look like Winnie the Pooh". Whilst this copy does not have a jacket, the scarcity of any hardback copies means that this will be highlight of any SF collection.
