About This Item

Slight toning, Pocket intact, FPD, Presentation Plate, FLEP, 2 small Congregation stamps, FLEP & BLEP, else content appears as unread and unblemished with black/red cloth covered boards displaying minimal surface/edge wear, as shown.. Perhaps slight sunning to spine.

In the middle of the eighteenth century, a world-shaking revolution was in the offing, social and industrial upheavals were in the making, and the Jews of Western Europe were about to be granted emancipation from the medieval attitudes which surrounded them. Ruben Rothgiesser found in this critical and promising period a set of circumstances which could be used as a background for a tale of struggle and adventure. The novel provides an excellent picture of Jewish life in the comparatively free commercial atmosphere of Amsterdam, the flighty salon society of Paris and the gloom-laden ghettos of Central and Eastern Europe.
