About This Item
Philadelphia, Pa ; New York, N.Y. : Independence Seaport Museum : W.W. Norton & Co., 2004. First Edition. Hardback. Fine cloth copy in a near-fine, very slightly edge-nicked and dust-dulled dw, now mylar-sleeved. Remains particularly well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong.; 8vo 8"" - 9"" tall; 248 pages; xxiv, 248 p. : col. ill. ; 29 x 31 cm. Summary: Art collector Glen Foster developed a consummate eye, combining a yachtsman's experience on the water with the instincts of an art connoisseur. Before its breakup upon his death in 1999, Foster's collection of historic American and British yachting and marine art was regarded as one of the finest in the country, and established new auction records when a portion was sold in 2002. Here for the first time is a glimpse of the collection, with descriptions contributed by some of the best historians of marine art today. Over eighty pieces by such artists as J. E. Buttersworth, Frederic Schiller Cozzens, Fitz Hugh Lane, Robert Salmon, E. T. Baker, and others are shown in beautifully reproduced full-color plates with descriptions relating to the scene or race depicted and notes on the artist and medium. In the annals of marine art it is rare to find such a powerful and comprehensive collection.
