About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1947. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. Douglas Gorsline. A very impressive copy of the 1947 1st thus (and 1st illustrated edition).THERE'S A WARM, FULL-PAGE INSCRIPTION FROM THOMAS WOLFE'S SISTER --MABEL WOLFE WHEATON- ON THE HALF-TITLE. ADDITIONALLY, ON THE FRONT PASTEDOWN IS "THE THOMAS WOLFE MEMORIAL" BOOKPLATE ("48 SPRUCE STREET, ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA") AND AN OLD LAID-IN PHOTOGRAPH OF THOMAS WOLFE INSCRIBED BY MABEL WOLFE WHEATON AT THE REAR. Furthermore, this is an especially sharp, well-preserved copy. Clean and Near Fine in a crisp, price-intact, Near Fine dustjacket, with very light creasing along the spine ends. Hnadsome and very presentable, and uncommon as such.

Synopsis

Look Homeward, Angel: A Story of the Buried Life is a 1929 novel by Thomas Wolfe. It is Wolfe's first novel, and is considered a highly autobiographical American Bildungsroman. The character of Eugene Gant is generally believed to be a depiction of Wolfe himself. The novel covers the span of time from Gant's birth to the age of 19. The setting is the fictional town and state of Altamont, Catawba, which is considered to be a not-so-subtle mirror of his hometown, Asheville, North Carolina.
