Half title page follows title page. Dr. Josef Skoda (1805 - 1881) is best known for his work as a pioneer in percussive diagnostics. The facq.org biography of Skoda says: "In 1839, Skoda published his treatise on percussion and auscultation. In it he attempts to classify the sounds in the chest according to categories that take into account musical pitch and tonality, with alternations from full to hollow, clear to dull, tympanitic to muffled, and high to deep. The drum-like tympanic resonance heard on percussion above an area of pneumonia or lung fluid is known as Skodaic resonance." Author Elisabeth Sanxay Holding (1889–1955) began her career as a writer of romance novels. After almost a decade of romance, Holding switched to the genre of the detective thriller. Miasma was the first detective novel Holding wrote. Holding's work was well received by critics and peers. Complete Title is: "Experiments of Spiritual Life & Health and their Preservatives in which the weakest child of God may get assurance of his spiritual life and blessednesse and the strongest may find proportionable discoveries of his Christian growth and the means of it. By Roger Williams of Providence in New England." The title page is a reproduction from 1652. This 1863 reproduction is faithful to the original with the typeface of the period substituting the letter "F" for "S" and using what is now less conventional spelling. This was a limited edition reprinting of 500 copies. Roger Williams (1603-1683) was a religious reformer, maverick, and perhaps the first supporter of Native American rights. Unique Handmade Ivory and Brass Cover on Rare 1901 Siddur (Jewish Prayerbook) Form of Prayers and Blessings of Israel with an English Translation published by the Hebrew Publishing Company, Brooklyn, New York Book opens right to left. 511 pages. 32mo: 4.75 by 3.5 inches in size and 1.75 inches thick. The original binding may have been green cloth which has been covered over. The first layer is a white or cream colored celluloid frame on the front and back covers with a brass frame. Teeny brass nails mark the midpoint of the frame closest to the spine on both front and back cover. A detailed brass clasp and peg to hold the volume closed are intact. The hinge and clasp are probably prefabricated pieces. The front cover was truly a labor of love with many layers of artistry. Maroon buckram centers the covers which are trimmed in leather at all corners and with an extended spine on both front and back cover. The leather is finished in a bright gilt border. Five raised bands decorate the spine. The raised bands are decorated in gilt dots. A plain gilt border decorates the very top and bottom of the spine. Just above the border on the bottom of the spines, and also in gilt, is "1803," the year this volume was published. The title, "Odes of Anacreon," also in gilt, appears between the first and second raised bands, and underneath each title, circled in gilt is the number 1 or 2, indicating which volume it is.
