MESSINA: PER IACOPO MATTEI , 1649. Rara opera del 1649 di Carlo Giangolino da Fano, geografo famoso. Alla Corte di Sicilia fu maestro del giovane Filippo IV di Spagna, scrisse due opere di erudizione geografica, di cui questa e' la piu' significativa. A dispetto del titolo, l'opera e' un'approfondita descrizione dei territori e popolazioni del Medio Oriente, dalla Turchia all'attuale Afghanistan.L'avvincente testo affianca oltre ad una esposizione geografica di molteplici citta', interessanti dissertazioni sulle popolazioni, sui loro usi, costumi, abitudini quotidiane, non trascurando la flora, fauna e geologia.Completamente dedicata a Messina l'ultima parte dell'opera, ne descrive il sito, la popolazione, gli uomini illustri. Frontespizio calcografico con titolo al centro di un'ampia struttura architettonica, in basso ovale con veduta della citta di Messina, tavola raffigurante l'autore e grande mappa ripiegata del medio Oriente incisa da Placido Donia. Ritratto dell'autore qui legato in antiporta. Capilettera xilografici e alcune incisioni in rame nel testo che riproducono i caratteri di altri alfabeti. In discrete condizioni. Copertina in mezza pelle settecentesca con decorazioni in oro al dorso in discrete condizioni generali con lievi usure ai margini e dorso. Legatura in buone condizioni con una rottura al frontespizio, la carta ++2, p, l'ultima carta. Pagine in discrete condizioni con fioriture e bruniture alle prime 28 carte e ultime 7 carte. Strappi orizzontali al ritratto in antiporta e due strappi di 7,5 cm alla mappa. Le prime sei carte presentano un restauro marginale con perdita di testo al frontespizio. Galleria di tarlo all'angolo inferiore destro fino a pag. 8. Le pagg. 3 e 5 legate male tra la 132 e la 133 (ad indicarlo un'antica nota manoscritta). Alcune piccole macchie di inchiostro a pag. 385 con lieve perdita di testo. Restauro ai margini delle ultime 4 carte con usure. In folio. Dim. 30,5x21,5 cm. Pp. (28)+531+(17). Peso Kg. 1,560 Scarce work of 1649 written by Carlo Giangolino da Fano, famous geographer.<BR><BR>In the court of Sicily he was teacher of the young Filippo IV di Spagna, wrote two works of geography, of which this is the most significant.<BR><BR>Despite the title, the work is a deep description of lands and people of Middle East, Turkey and nowadays Afghanistan.<BR><BR>The author describes cities from a geographical point of view, inhabitants, their usages, costumes and daily habitudes, vegetables, animals and geology.<BR><BR>The last part of the work is completely dedicated to Messina describing places, inhabitants, important people.<BR><BR>Calcographic title page in the centre of an important architectonic frame, in the lowest part an oval with view of the city of Messina, plate with the portrait of the author and big folded map of Middle East engraved by Placido Donia.<BR><BR>Portrait of the author here bound in the frontspice.<BR><BR>Woodcut initial letters and some copper plates reproducing the letters of other alphabets. <BR><BR>In fair conditions.<BR>Half leather cover of 18th century with golden decorations in the spine in fair general conditions lightly worn in the extremities. Binding in good conditions with a crack in the title page, in the page ++2 and last page. Inside pages are in fair conditions with foxing and yellowing in the first 28 pages and last 7 pages. Horizontal tears in the portrait and two tears of 7,5 cm in the map. The first six pages have a restauration sign in the edge with loss of text in the title page. Worming in the lower right corner until pag. 8. Pages 3 and 5 bound for a fault between 132 and 133 (indication of an antique handwritten note). Some little ink's stains in pag. 385 with light loss of text. Restauration in the edges of the last 4 pages with wearings. In folio. Dim. 30,5x21,5 cm. Pp. (28)+531+(17). Peso Kg. 1,56
