Edition peu commune, ornée de jolies figures non signées, de ce recueil d'anecdotes galantes sur la cour de France, de Pharamond à Louis XIV. Papier de couvrure renouvelé, une pièce de titre habilement refaite dans le goût de l'époque, coiffes de tête frottées, mouillures touchant le texte et les gravures. Assez-bon exemplaire..

Modern ink owner's name to the front pastedown. Pages browned throughout. Underlining in red and blue crayon throughout, more so to the first half of the volume. German translation of the first 12 letters by Forster. The second part of the letters was apparently published in English in 1798 and in German in 1800..

In the original paper covered boards with printed paper spine labels, covered with plain paper wrapper which are lightly browned to the spines. In the original paper covered card slip case - also numbered 444 in pencil above the printed spine label. Stained. Splits to the joins on the slipcase. Two lists of publications of the Cuala Press are loosely inserted, these have pencil and pen marks on them..

Samuel Richardson (baptised 19 August 1689 – 4 July 1761) was an English writer and printer best known for three epistolary novels: Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded (1740), Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady (1748) and The History of Sir Charles Grandison (1753). He printed almost 500 works in his life, including journals and magazines, working periodically with the London bookseller Andrew Millar. Richardson had been apprenticed to a printer, whose daughter he eventually married. He lost her along with five sons, but remarried and had four daughters who reached adulthood, but no male heirs to continue the print shop. He features in stories set at Greyfriars School, originally published in the boys' weekly story paper The Magnet from 1908 to 1940.
