New York: New York Book Company, 1870. First Thus . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 650pp. 42 plates of engravings. illus. 8vo. Green cloth with gilt spine titles. Hinges broken, front end paper missing, old masking tape connecting front paste down and frontispiece verso, mostly mild/ some moderate foxing to interior, light wear to board edges and spine ends, spine mildly cocked. This is an apparent reissue with a twist of original title by the publisher of the 1869 Women of New York or the Under-world of a Great City by Ellington - a pseudonym according to OCLC, possibly for James Dabney McCabe in the opinion of one scholar (citation on request). The contents: Women of Fashion, Women of Pleasure, Married Women, Wicked Women, Female Artistes, Life in a Female Seminary, Other Women, Female institutions. The last paragraph of the preface sums up the book's general premise: " There are doubtless many true and noble women among the fashion and intelligence of the great city, but we regret to say, the army of the faithless and sinning ones seems to outnumber them in proportions and outrank then in influence".
