First edition of a landmark Dutch anti-colonialist and anti-missionary treatise. This controversial and heavily criticized work marks a shift in thinking about the Western influence around the world. It is a rare work and here in excellent. Only a few copies are recorded in libraries outside The Netherlands.
At the end of November 1803, the Teyler's Religious Society in Haarlem organized a competition. A treatise was to be prepared on the question, "What service have missionaries done to the propagation of true Christianity in the past two centuries, and what fruit is there been to expected from the present active missionary societies in this regard?". Leyden [Leiden]: Maire, 1636. First edition. Two volumes in one. Separately published in 1636 and 1638. Full vellum binding. Firm and attractive, with just a touch of bowing to the boards. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with woodcut vignettes to the each of the two title pages. Three woodcut illustrations of military equipment to volume I. Four historiated initials to vol I. and 5 to volume II. Complete. Slight weakness to the rear hinge on the binding. End papers are of cheaper paper, and have a little edge wear. An early account of the Provinces of the Netherlands and Flanders. [viii] 190, [iv], 452pp. 325 x 210 mm (12¾ x 8¼ inches).

1750. Rare printing of Doctor Faust's chapbook in Dutch. Woodcut on title, 58 (repeated) woodcut illustrations. A total of 60 vignettes. Complete. More recent paper covers. These are somewhat rubbed with significant rubbing and loss to the spine. Written number to the front cover. The date c.1750 is printed on the remnant of a catalogue label stuck to the front cover. The impressions of the engravings are somewhat are somewhat blurred. P. 41, repeated on p. 76, the illustrations are not woodcuts but metalcuts. The shape of the heads of the nails with which the plates were mounted on wood are printed on many of them. A nice example. 86 (2) pp. 205 x 165 mm (8 x 6½ inches). With accompanying letter-press text within red ornamental borders. Contains a biography by Gerit van Ernst Koning (1794-1853), and verse descriptions by J. van Lennep (1802-1868). It also includes a short list of theater scenes created by Pfeiffer.

The binding is tight with slight lean, corners are sharp. No marks or inscriptions. Top edge stained grey. The original red lettered dust jacket shows wear and tears with loss to upper spine end and tape repairs. Light spotting and discoloration and fading to spine. 366 pp., 22,5 x 16,5 cm. First edition, first printing of one of the classics in Dutch literature in the extremely rare dust jacket. The book was adapted into a film in 1997 that won the Oscar for best International Feature Film. .

Haarlem & Rotterdam, 1847. Delightful album in the form of a small cloth covered box. Inside a folded decorative inner envelope, containing a selection of original artwork and keepsakes. In total there are 21 original miniature artworks. Comprising: one double size folded original pencil drawing with tissue guard, and eight other lovely pencil drawings. Also six colour original watercolours - all but one of exquisite flowers. One sepia scene of two hunters. And two watercolours done on rice paper. Also two delightful examples of cross stitch and one decoupage, all in flower designs. There is also one pinprick flower design, which is very intricate and skillfully done. There are three handwritten ink notes inside - all in Dutch. One of the notes signed C.
