Part of a scholarly collection of Scottish Gaelic texts (in both Gaelic and English translation) recently purchased which contains thirteen volumes in this series (i.e. not a complete set). Each volume stands entirely alone. The books are in excellent condition. All contain an attractive decorative bookplate inscribed "is leam an leabhak seo....A.V.R. Macghomhnaill" with woven thistle design, neatly pasted to inside front cover. All the other books in this series still available for sale are listed on this site, and a search under Publisher will quickly isolate them. Boards are brown cloth, lettering red, colour print of painting affixed to front, as issued, with red border. Back has light edge wear, has a small bruise on top edge that shows 1/8 inch spot of board underneath, two slightly bent corners both with very slight breaking of cloth, three short lines where top finish has been pulled off, and minor shelf soil. Spine is bright, solid, no rips, a bit of edge wear all four edges and some minor creases top and bottom. Grey cloth over boards, title and author image stamped in gilt and maroon onto upper board, title stamped in gilt onto spine, 8vo (7-7/16 inches tall), pp. 317, all edges trimmed, top edge gilt, author portrait frontis, title page printed in black and red, 4 illustrations [5 inc. frontis]. Volume with cover illustration lightly rubbed, wear to spine ends, spine tilt, small 1/2" piece missing at bottom of one leaf. Page 15 has a few lines taken from a letter written in French - pertaining to the story - neatly translated into English underneath. First published in Russia in 1899 and later translated by William E. Smith, this was the last novel written by Tolstoy.
