The long and lower edges are rough cut, the top edge is gilded. the interior is clean and clear with a few examples of underlining in pencil. Thick octavo (21.75); photo-illustrated wrappers, with titles printed in red on spine and front cover; [viii],542,[2]pp. Some trivial dust-soil to rear wrapper, else a fresh, Fine copy, sharp-cornered and without wear. Lovely example of Stanford's 15,283-line epic poem, the last of his books published prior to taking his own life in 1978. A significant portion of the original print run was destroyed in a basement flood, and it would be nearly 14 years after publication before the book would go entirely out of print. Over time the book has developed its own mystique, with copies being passed from hand-to-hand, and marathon readings taking place on college campuses. The front cover reproduces a wire photograph of corpses and grieving women, taken at Tan Son Nhut Airport in Saigon, on the last day of the Vietnam War, which was replaced for the recent reissue by Lost Roads Publisher's (2000).

Dubuque: Ralph Law, 1975. 33 3/4 x 16. Excellent. This is an original large watercolor by noted steamboat artist Ralph Law. The watercolor is on board. It is an exceptionally nice rendering of the steamboat America. The detail is so great that you can see the stars on the America flag. The steamboat was launched in 1900 and was designed for excursions between Cincinnati and Louisville. It was originally named the Indiana. It was partially destroyed by a fire at the Cincinnati waterfront on May 1st, 11916. The original builders, Howard Shipbuilders rebuilt the boat using the hull of the Indiana. They renamed the boat "America." It was a large vessel being 285 feet Lon and 45 wide at the hull and 82 feet over the deck. The boat operated between Cincinnati and Louisville even at low water because the hull pulled only six feet for clearance. The boat was originally set up for packet service between the two cities.
