SOURCE OF THE TITLE PRIDE AND PREJUDICEBURNEY, FRANCES. Cecilia, or Memoirs of an Heiress. By the Author of Evelina. 12mo. Bound in full speckled calf with gilt-lettered spine labels; page edges dyed yellow. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son. 1782. First Edition. 5 volumes. With the misspelled catchword on page 235 of vol. II and the mispaginated page 159 in vol. V. The first edition of Fanny Burney's second novel, recounting the trials and tribulations of a wealthy young orphan who, launched into society, must guard her fortune and virtue from the depredations of assorted suitors. A follow-up to her hugely successful Evelina, Cecilia is "less unstudied" than the earlier work, "with greater polish, and a 'literary quality' that gave rise to the report that Dr. Johnson had corrected it." (Kunitz & Haycraft) An interesting incidental note is the appearance near the end of the book of a phrase that would gain immortality in the hands of a slightly later author:"'The whole of this unfortunate… Read More

London: Dean & Munday, [ca. 1820s] First edition? There is also a twenty-four-page Derby edition from T. Richardson. We have been unable to establish priority. Both editions are scarce: OCLC records only three copies of this edition (UCLA, the Huntington, Princeton) and three of the T. Richardson (University of Alberta, Cambridge, NYPL, University of Kentucky). Modern gray paper wrappers. 4 x 7 in. . With a hand-colored frontispiece of two women dressed in early nineteenth century gowns. Offsetting to title-page, otherwise a very good, clean copy. A sensational novel of a young woman who leaves her modest country life to find employment in the corrupt and fast-paced city. Though besieged by the advances of men, Fanny Bilson maintains her honor and escapes back to the safety of her father's home, now with a reputable gentleman on her arm.

Description:
1764 OVID Art of Love Romance Erotica ENGLISH Dryden Chaucer Ars Amatoria RARE

"I grabbed a pile of dust, and holding it up, foolishly asked for as many birthdays as the grains of dust, I forgot to ask that they be years of youth."
― Ovid, Metamorphoses

Ovid was a 1st-century BC Roman poet most-known for his poems on mythology. His works are known to have inspired the works of Dante, Boccaccio, Chaucer, and even Shakespeare as well as works of visual art and music. One of his lesser-known works was his series of instructional works on the art of love, 'Ars Amatoria'. This book was one of the first "how to's" written for men on how to treat women – how to avoid false love, how to meet women, even techniques on engaging romantically.

This particular edition of 'Art of Love' and 'Remedy of Love' was published in 1764 London in English and contains the translations of both Dryden and Chaucer. Unlike other editions, this version contains a 'History of Love' by Charles Hopkins at the end.

Description:
1887 Atala Chateaubriand Gustave Doré Romance Tragedy Natchez Indians Chactas

"Atala," by François-René vicomte de Chateaubriand, is a 19th-century romantic novella set in early colonial North America. It tells the tragic love story of Atala, a Christian Natchez Indian, and Chactas, a young Native American from a different tribe. The story explores themes of love, religion, and the conflict between civilization and nature.

This folio edition, translated by James Spence Harry, features 30 striking illustrations by renowned artist Gustave Doré, who captures the dramatic and emotive scenes from the story with his intricate and evocative engravings. Doré's illustrations bring the characters, landscapes, and pivotal moments of Chateaubriand's tale to life, adding depth and visual appeal to this classic work of French literature.
