Description:
Sydney: Penguin Random House Australia, 2014. Paperback small trade, very good condition, minor edgewear, faint sticker mark rear cover. 163 pp. The impressive story of the Scottish soldier who was the innovative governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821. Governor Lachlan Macquarie was a reformer and an emancipator. He believed a person’s worth - be they gentry, infantry or convict - lay in what they were capable of doing, not what they had done in the past. He freed the brilliant mercurial convict Francis Greenway and made him government architect for the buildings that would shape a new nation. The Tory British Government of 1820, thought that Macquarie and Greenway's unconventional alliance threatened the very legitimacy of NSW as a penal colony. Luke Slattery breathes dramatic life into Australia's first political dismissal and, along the way, maps Macquarie and Greenway's bold collaborations and architectural and cultural legacy.
