Description:
Angus & Robertson. 1974. Reprint. . Mass-market paperback. Very good. light cover wear, spine creased. 174 p. Includes illustrations. . Beyond the Kubea is the gripping account of an expedition to central new Guinea undertaken in 1937 by Jack Hides, David Lyall and their 54 native carriers. Making their way up the swiftly-flowing Strickland River, fighting the ever-increasing current mile by mile, they struggled overland and succeeded, in spite of fog, rain and landslides in crossing the Kubea Mountains. Lyall's illness, the failure of wireless and an outbreak of beri-beri made the journey down the mountain to the river, and down this rushing torrent 600 miles to the coast, a terrible experience.
