Illia Kiriak, 1888-1955, was born in the Western Ukraine and emigrated to Canada in 1906 working as a laborer and then as a journalist for Ukrainian language newspapers in Edmonton (Alta). He trained as a teacher and worked in various Ukrainian districts across east central Alberta from 1919 until 1936. He published his three-volume epic novel of Ukrainian immigrant life in Canada, Syny Zemli, between 1939 and 1945.
