About the author

Carole Emma Mathewson, a native of Visalia, California, was a secretary for many years (both executive and legal) and has also been a legal-process clerk. She devoted a number of years to newspaper work, as a news reporter and copy editor in both Arizona and California. With college units in Early Childhood Education, Mathewson has also been a preschool teacher. She has resided in Payson, Arizona since 1992. She attributes her writing ability, in large part, to her late mother's encouragement and editing of her work. Too, she has had superb teachers and college instructors, along with a number of brilliant employers, all of whom have influenced her writing. She considers past employment experiences important additions to her education. At the time of publication of this story, Mathewson is preparing three additional works for publication. World War II on the Home Front, though written as fiction, concerns the writer's childhood on a California ranch during the war years, and the effect that war news had on her life. The manuscript is expected to be ready for publication in 2015. Rimview, Arizona concerns an Arizona newspaper reporter and the strange people she meets while gathering news. The idea for the work came from Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio. While Anderson's reporter is a male, Mathewson's is female. Another work in progress is as yet untitled. It concerns the writer's forebear Roger Williams, founder of Providence, Rhode Island. Through research, Mathewson has come to know and admire her early forebear. The writer has written, and published, another work concerning Providence-a one-woman, one-act play titled The Hostess of Providence. The play has been presented on stage by Mathewson in a portrayal of her forebear Hannah Field Mathewson, who tells of life in early Providence. For many years before the undertaking of this writing, the author was interested in acquiring knowledge concerning her great-grandparents, Dr. Harley P. Mathewson and Mary Sanborn Mathewson, and the part they played in the American Civil War. Following the acquisition and study of books concerning the battles, campaigns and hospitals where the couple served, The Waste of War was born.
