Description:
London: Methuen & Co, 1999. 1st thus. h/b. Very good, 1st thus edition with Mervyn Peake illustrations. Clipped d/j (some browning on spine), maroon clothboards, silver spine titling bright; text block firm, pages unmarked. Donor's inscription on ffep. . 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). The Hunting of the Snark (An Agony in 8 Fits) is usually thought of as a nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll in 1874, when he was already 42 years old and after the death of his godson had shattered his religious beliefs thoroughly. It actually is a fantastical epic tale recounting the adventures of a bizarre troupe of nine tradesmen and a beaver on their search for the Snark, a mysterious creature living in the seas.

Description:
London; Toronto: Chatto and Windus; The Macmillan Company of Canada, 1941. First Edition with illustrations by Peake. Hardcover. Fair/Fair. ix, [1], 11-44, [2] p. 22 cm. B&w illustrations. Pink cloth in mylar-covered pictorial dustjacket. Some soiling and chips to jacket. Also some soiling to inside, especially to p. 17, the last page of text, and rear endpapers. Tiny tear in bottom of p. 37. First published in 1876, this fanciful eight-canto poem describes the sea voyage of a bellman, boots, bonnet maker, barrister, broker, billiard marker, banker, beaver, baker, and butcher on a search for the elusive snark. Here the epic is illustrated by Mervyn Peake, who is said to have been paid only £ 5 for his work. If so, it seems a pity, for Peake's goofy pictures are the perfect accompaniment to Carroll's nonsense.
