Clean unfaded dark blue cloth boards with gold decoration (3 small crowns, line border, brown and white and gold open book) on cover; unworn gold lettering on spine. Tiny bit of wear to spine corners. Binding is tight and square, hinges are sound. Clean endpapers. No names, writing or marks. Beautiful frontispiece illustration with clean tissue guard, with sixteen additional full page illustrations. Gilt top page edges. 286 pages and 291 pages. No date of publication, circa 1900..

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. In volume One, the spine is cracked at page 97 and again at page 171, resulting in uneven though still solid binding. In Volume II, the cloth is beginning to fray at the head and middle of the spine and the front paste down is damaged where a small booksellerseller's sticker has been removed.This is still present in volume I and both volumes have a neat ownership signature on the head of the front paste down. For its faults, it remains a nice set.

Perfectly unsophisticated publishers bindings - uniform, mauve, pebbled cloth, blind-stamped. Some cocking, some abrasion to front cover on second volume. Like a pair of sturdy old, comfortable shoes, showing natural age and wear. (No names, inscription, or bookplates which is unusual for the period).
