Detroit: The Detroit Free Press, Publisher, 1861. Tabloid. Fair. Large format newspaper. 4 pages, with each date consisting of two pages, bound as a single piece. Two short issues of this newspaper, containing several lengthy articles and shorter briefs on the Civil War. This includes a printing of the May 3rd proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln increasing the size of the army and navy; reports from Washington, Missouri and Arkansas; report on General Houston in Texas and his speech; an African-American view of the crisis; an alleged plot to burn Boston, New York and Philadelphia, etc. FAIR/GOOD condition. Heavy chipping, tearing and creasing along the extremities, with minor loss, sometimes affecting text. Heavy browning. Scattered foxing, soiling and staining. Horizontal and fold creases present, as well as other creases. Text hard to read in a few places due to creasing.

Washington, D.C., April 1861.. [1]p. on a folded folio sheet of "Thirty- Sixth Congress House of Representatives" illustrated letterhead. Plus integral blank, docketed and with a four-line note in an unknown hand on the fourth page, as well as Lincoln's signature and five-line autograph endorsement. Two old horizontal folds. One small nick to right edge of both leaves, small contemporary ink stains. Near fine. An excellent Lincoln signature and autograph endorsement from the earliest days of the Civil War, on an interesting letter relating the efforts to keep the U.S.S. Constitution from falling into Confederate hands. Commander Timothy Monroe of the 8th Massachusetts Militia Regiment writes President Lincoln on a piece of House Representatives letterhead, with a manuscript date of "April, 1861."
