There was a French translation of 1819, reprinted in 1822, an American edition of Boston, 1820, a German translation of Weimar, 1819, an abbreviated Swedish version which appeared in a collection of travels in 1828, and several subsequent edition. Volume I frontis portrait of Mariner in the costume of the Tonga Islands, very nice large fold-out map of the Tonga Islands at the front of volume II. Each volume contains the half-title page. Lvi, 444, 344 pp. With an unpaginated (40 p) Grammar of the Tonga Language and a (104 p. )Vocabulary Tonga and English at rear of volume II. Errata at rear of volume II. Mariner (1791-1853) sailed as ships clerk on the privateer Port Au Prince. In 1806 while anchored at the Tongan island of Lifuka, the crew were attacked and all but Mariner and a few others were killed. Mariner was spared and lived for 4 years among the natives on Tonga.
