John Parker delivered the 1964 Burton Lecture at the 90th annual meeting of the Historical Society of Michigan at Flint. His subject was the dream of empire by a dedicated British subject, Jonathan Carver, who was one of the early (1766-1768) explorers of the mid-West, Specifically the Great Lakes area and its waterways.
