London: printed for William Innys, 1732. The fourth edition (hardback). 8vo (20cm by 13cm), xxxii, 456pp. Portrait frontispiece, 4 engraved plates. Recently rebound in full brown calf, blue title label to the spine with gilt lettering (lettering applied a little amateurishly). Light spotting and age-toning of the contents, light staining of the rear board, short ownership inscription. Overall, this copy is in good to very good condition. Stated "fourth edition" on the title page, although the 1721 edition was also called the fourth edition.

John Ray was a 17th-century English naturalist known for his plethora of important works on natural sciences, most notably botany and zoology. Bound in full embossed calf leather with five raised spine bands and a red leather title label stamped in gilt on the spine. Frontis plate of Ray and three additional copper en gravings of coins of the ancient Greeks and Romans, fossils, and bone artifacts. 8vo size, 456pp. A Very Good copy. The leather has small ru b spots to the corners and spine tips. There is a 2" crack at the fro nt seam near the head of the spine. The upper rear corner is rubbed a nd rounded. Small bookplate of Varnum Hull on the front endpaper. Mode rate foxing and toning to the pages. The interior is tight and otherwi se unmarked. Ray was a Parson-Naturalist who published several works on Geology, Zoology, Plant species and Theology. With four engraved plates, small octavo, t.p., 20,132,[6], 133-406, + 2-page publisher's catalogue, browning and age-toning with occasional blotching, a corner torn from the first blank, a worm-hole in the margin of the early pages but only really noticeable on the first eleven pages, tight internally, original calf, rubbed and pocked, neatly re-backed with new unlettered leather spine, the original endpapers retained. [In Ray’s time understanding of creation was governed by the account in the Bible. It was thought that the earth dated from about 5000BC and that fossils were formed in nature as imitations of shells, fish or other creatures, but were not a genuine creature.
